Sizing one player is easy. Sizing fourteen, from the smallest winger to the tallest coach, takes a plan. This guide gives you that plan. We do not publish a numeric measurement chart, so the method below uses something every player already has: a shirt that fits them the way they like. Measure that shirt, compare it with the jersey you are considering, and you have a reliable starting point.

Measure a shirt you already own

This is the core of the guide. It takes two minutes per player and removes most of the guesswork.

What you need

  • A soft tape measure, or a piece of string and a ruler.
  • A flat surface such as a table or a clean floor.
  • A T-shirt or jersey the player already wears and likes the fit of. A sports top is best because it is cut closest to a jersey.

Step 1: lay it flat

Lay the shirt face up on the flat surface. Smooth out wrinkles with your hands without stretching the fabric. Fold the sleeves in or leave them straight out to the sides, whichever keeps the body flat.

Step 2: measure the chest width

Measure straight across the front of the shirt from one side seam to the other, just below the armholes. This is the single most useful number for comparing tops, because it decides whether the jersey feels tight or roomy on the body.

Step 3: measure the body length

Measure from the highest point of the shoulder, next to the collar, straight down to the bottom hem. Length matters for players who tuck jerseys in, such as baseball and softball players, and for tall players whose tops ride up.

Step 4: write it down

Note both measurements next to the player’s name on your roster sheet, along with the size label printed in their shirt. That label plus the measurement gives you a much better picture than the label alone, because size labels vary between makers.

Step 5: compare and choose

Use the shirt’s size label as your starting size. If you are unsure how our jersey in that size compares with the shirt you measured, email us your measurements and the product you are looking at, and we will help you decide. We do not publish garment measurements, so please do not rely on a size chart from another seller.

Choosing between two sizes

Many players fall between sizes. Think about how they will wear the jersey.

Size up when

  • The player wears a layer underneath, such as a base layer in cold-weather soccer or flag football.
  • The player is still growing and the jersey needs to last the season or longer.
  • The sport involves a lot of reaching and stretching, such as volleyball or goalkeeping.
  • The player simply prefers a relaxed fit.

Stay with the smaller size when

  • The player likes a close fit that does not catch on arms or opponents.
  • The jersey is a baseball or softball top worn tucked in, where extra fabric bunches at the waist.
  • The player is at the top end of youth sizes and an adult S would sit loose.

Youth or adult?

Older children and young teens often sit right at the line between youth XL and adult S. Measure their best-fitting shirt and check its label. If the label says adult, start with adult. If it says youth XL and fits well, start with youth XL. Remember youth sizes cost $4 to $6 less than adult sizes.

Sizing a whole roster

A team order has its own challenges. These steps keep it under control.

  1. Send a size request early. Ask every player or parent for the size label and chest width of a shirt that fits well. Give a deadline a few days before you plan to order.
  2. Collect it in one sheet. One row per player: name, number, size, youth or adult, and any notes.
  3. Look for outliers. If one player reports a much bigger or smaller measurement than their size label suggests, check with them before ordering.
  4. Do not guess for absent players. If someone has not replied, wait for them or order their jersey separately later. A late single order costs the same and ships free.
  5. Enter one cart line per player. Choose the size first, then type the name and number, then add to cart. Check the size on every line before paying.

Example: a mixed youth and coach order

A youth soccer coach orders 14 Custom Team Soccer Jerseys in youth sizes, 2 Custom Goalkeeper Jerseys and two adult jerseys for the coaches, all shipped to a school address in Canada. They collect measurements from each family, enter every player as a separate cart line, and select adult sizes only for the two coaches. Because youth and adult sizes sit in the same size menu, they read each line in the cart once more before paying.

Example: an adult office team

An office softball organiser collects sizes from twelve colleagues. Two need 3XL and one needs 4XL, which cost $3 to $4 more than the base price. Everyone else is within S to XL. Each colleague gets their own line with a nickname and number on the back.

Shorts, socks, pinnies and hoodies

Team shorts

Team Basketball Shorts and Team Soccer Shorts use the same size labels as the jerseys. Many players wear the same size top and bottom, but not all. Measure a pair of shorts the player likes: lay them flat and measure across the waistband, then from the waistband to the hem. Basketball shorts also offer an optional leg number, which you type on the product page.

Team Crew Socks

Socks come in Youth, S/M and L/XL and are priced per pair. Choose by the player’s shoe size. If you are unsure which sock size matches a shoe size, email us before ordering and we will help.

Team Practice Pinnies

Pinnies are cut loose to go over a training top. Choose One Size Adult for teens and adults, One Size Youth for younger players. Set the quantity on one cart line per colour and size, with no roster needed.

Custom Team Pullover Hoodie

The hoodie is adult only, S to 4XL. Hoodies are usually worn over other layers on the bench or in the stands, so many people choose their usual size or one size up. Measure a hoodie the person already owns, chest width and body length, the same way as a shirt.

Fit by sport

Each sport asks something different of a jersey. Use these notes alongside your measurements.

Basketball

Basketball jerseys are sleeveless and usually worn a little loose so arms move freely on a jump shot. Players who wear a compression top underneath often go one size up. The Custom Team Shooting Shirt goes over the game jersey during warm-ups, so many players choose their usual T-shirt size.

Soccer and goalkeeping

Field players tend to prefer a close fit that an opponent cannot grab. Goalkeepers dive and stretch, and in cold weather often wear a layer underneath, so a goalkeeper jersey one size up is common.

Baseball and softball

Button-front and two-button jerseys are often tucked in. Check the body length of the shirt you measured, because a top that is too short pulls out of the waistband when a player swings or slides.

Volleyball and flag football

Volleyball players reach overhead constantly, so make sure the jersey will not ride up. Flag football players need room for the flag belt at the waist; a jersey that ends around the hip keeps the flags visible.

Reversible practice jerseys

The colours are printed on both faces and the jersey is flipped between drills. Most players wear it over a T-shirt, so their usual size or one up works well.

Common sizing mistakes on team orders

  • Choosing an adult size for a youth player because the menu was left on the previous line’s size.
  • Guessing a size from age alone. Two players of the same age can be several sizes apart.
  • Ordering every player the same size to save time. It rarely works beyond a very small team.
  • Forgetting the coaches. Adult coaches need their own lines in adult sizes.
  • Copying a size chart from another seller. Our sizes are our own, so compare with a shirt instead and ask us if unsure.

If the size is wrong

It happens, even with careful measuring. You have 60 days to return any item, including personalised jerseys. Change-of-mind returns get a free return label, and there is no restocking fee.

  1. Email us with your order number, the item and the size you need instead.
  2. We send the free return label.
  3. Place a new order for the right size straight away, so the player is not without a jersey for long.
  4. When your return reaches us, we refund within 7 days to the original payment method, or issue store credit if you ask. Store credit never expires.

Spotted a wrong size within 24 hours of ordering? Email us and we can change it before production. See Cancel or Change an Order, Returns and Exchanges and the Refund Policy.

Plan sizing around your deadline

Exchanges take time because a new order goes through the usual timeline: 1-3 business days of processing and 7-14 business days in transit to the US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. If your first game is close, put extra effort into measuring before you order. See Shipping and Delivery for timing.
